Air Conditioning & Refrigeration
School of Applied Studies
The Heating, Air Conditioning And Refrigeration Technology (HART) program at TJC is designed to prepare the student to assist in planning, installation, operation and maintenance of air conditioning equipment. The required technical information is presented and related skills are developed which will enable the graduate to function efficiently when working with engineers, system designers, skilled craftsmen, salespersons and others in the field.
The AAS Degree is the most valuable exit option that TJC offers. Graduates of the two-year program will be able to advance more quickly in industry. It is best to obtain all of the training you can, so that you may increase your earning potential. Trained air conditioning technicians are very much in demand, so employment opportunities are plentiful.
If you choose one of the certificate options, you may use completed courses toward a degree or other certificates. The certificate options are THEA exempt, which means you will not be required to take the state-mandated college entrance exam in order to enroll. If enrolled in any of the certificate programs, you may take only the courses listed in that certificate, but you may be enrolled in more than one certificate program at a time.
The HART program located in TJC's Regional Training and Development Complex on west Loop 323 in Tyler. Various brands of heating, cooling, and refrigeration equipment are installed and maintained by students in our labs. One of our labs is dedicated for commercial refrigeration. It includes a combination walk-in cooler/freezer, several restaurant-style commercial ice making machines, reach-in freezers & refrigerators, and other types of commercial refrigeration machines. Students may earn a Commercial Refrigeration Certificate of Proficiency.
All air conditioning & refrigeration classes at TJC are taught in a combination of lecture & lab format, with emphasis on hands-on.
Under Texas Law, an individual is not required to be a licensed contractor, as long as his employer is licensed by the State. Three years of work experience is required before a person may become a licensed contractor. Classroom training may be counted as part of the mandatory work experience, with two years of training equal to one year of work experience. Texas Department of Licensing and Regulation.
The equipment that HVAC/R technicians will install and maintain contains refrigerant (Freon, etc.) regulated by federal law. The law requires that all persons involved in transferring refrigerant must be certified by the Environmental Protection Agency to handle refrigerants. You may not work under somebody else's certification. EPA Certification consists of a one-time exam that tests your knowledge of the Clean Air Act. The training you will receive in TJC'S air conditioning program will assist you in passing the EPA-required certification exam for refrigerant handling. Separate from the credit programs, TJC offers a refrigerant handling seminar & EPA-approved test through the Testing Center. Call the Testing Center at (903) 510-2617 for information on the next test date.
