BUSINESS MANAGEMENT Certificate Programs Nature of the Occupation. Graduates with a two-year business management degree are normally employed in mid-level management positions or as an assistant manager. The tasks they perform vary from business to business but usually involve the supervision of other employees and insuring that the operating procedures of a given area within the business are conducted in an efficient and profitable, cost-effective manner. Managers work with their supervisor to formulate, modify and implement policies which direct the activities and operations of the company. Working Conditions. Most managers work in comfortable offices located close to the area which they supervise, but some managers move about frequently, conducting business by the direct supervision of employees within a work environment. Gathering data and organizing information for reports and making recommendations to superiors based upon those reports is routine. Texas Estimated Salary Data. The salary for this occupation varies from business to business and increases with experience and responsibility. For outstanding work, bonuses and profit sharing may be given. Texas Employment Outlook. General managers and top executives held over 3.1 million jobs in 1990. Employment is most concentrated in restaurants, groceries, institutions, and hospitals. Employment should grow as fast as the average for most fields through the year 2005, but many service industries will expand more than others. Employment should grow rapidly in computer services, management, consulting, public relations, and other business services. Employment should also grow in industries concerned with health and welfare such as medical clinics and social services agencies.
