Purpose: Provide course work to transfer to senior universities for completion of bachelor's degree. Provide job skills for immediate employment. Will transfer to some colleges/universities in Texas.

 

Typical Student Questions:

1. Why should I go to Tyler Junior College rather than to a university during my first two

years of college?

TJC costs less to attend than four year institution yet offers equal or superior educational opportunities. Smaller classes, more individualized instruction and state-of-the-art equipment are typical of a junior/community college.

In addition, TJC may be the best option for most students because it awards a two-year degree. if a student cannot complete a four-year degree immediately, a two-year degree helps In job placement and increased earning potential.

2. Will the courses I take at TJC, under the A.A. plan, transfer to other universities?

Yes. This plans designed for transfer into the College of Business at senior universities in Texas.

However, each university has slightly different requirements. Once you decide which university you wish to transfer to your faculty advisor will assist you in tailoring your degree to that university's requirements.

3. if I obtain an A.A. degree in Business Administration from TJC, can I major in marketing at a senior university?

Of course. Any degree plan offered by the College of Business will accept our transfer-designed curriculum. It is at the junior level that you choose a major in business. Your area of concentration could be finance, accounting, marketing, management or administration.

4. What is the difference between the A.A. and A.A.S. degree plans?

The A.A. plan (transfer curriculum) includes liberal arts courses required by senior universities,
as well as business specific courses. The A.A.S. plan (two-year technical curriculum) consists mainly of business specific courses.This allows students to focus on specialized areas of study that will enhance immediate job skills and job advancement potential.

5. If I earn an A.A.S. degree at TJC, but decide to go on to a senior college five years

later, will my courses transfer?

Yes. The Bachelor of Applied Arts and Science (B.A.A.S.) degree was designed for you! This degree is offered in different departments depending on the university. At UTT, for instance, you would obtain a B.A.A.S. in industry and Applied Technology.

6. If I complete two years of study at TJC and transfer to an upper level institutions, will I
be at a disadvantage to student who attended the institution since their freshman year?

Studies of grade point averages of students in their third year at major universities in Texas (UTT,
UNT, SFA, ETSU, SHSU, UTAM), show no significant differences in student performance. In
fact, some universities are encouraging community college course work.

7. Does It matter ff1 transfer to another university before earn an acetate degree at TJC?

You bet! Studies show that 44% of transfer students do not complete a bachelor's degree. But
a worker with an A.A. degree will earn 28% more over a life time than someone with some
college (even 3 years) who did not earn a degree. Forty-four percent of transfer students do not
complete a bachelor's degree. 

8. How many TJC transfer students earn bachelor's degrees?

Fifty-six percent of TJC transfer students earn a bachelor's degree within three years of transfer compared to a U.S. average of only 45%.
