Nature of the Occupation. Graduates with a bachelor of business administration degree (BBA) are normally employed in the area of their major or specialization, which may be accounting, business computer applications, finance, general business, management, marketing, etc. The tasks they perform vary considerably from business to business.

Accountants generally prepare, analyze and verify financial information for owners or managers of the business.

Computer managers facilitate networking and communication within the business, generate and modify existing computer programs and insure that the company uses modern computer equipment and systems needed to operate efficiently.

Managers formulate, modify, and implement policies and procedures which direct the activities and operations of the company.

bullet

Marketing personnel create and carry out advertising and sales strategies which make the company's products or services available to the public.

bullet

Finance personnel examine the financial condition and resources of the company and the financial market to determine the most efficient methods of managing financial resources, investing profits, and insuring the company's profitability.

Working Conditions. Most business graduates work in comfortable offices near the operations they direct or the top executives to whom they report. Executives work in more lavish offices and often have cars, club memberships and expense allowances that facilitate meetings with other people. Long hours, including evenings and weekends, and business discussions during social engagements are common. Travel is frequently required between national, regional and local offices. Top executives may travel to meet their counterparts in other countries. Managers experience considerable pressure to meet goals.

Texas Estimated Salary Data. The salary for this occupation varies depending upon the major chosen within the bachelor of business administration degree (BBA). In general, students with a major in accounting, business computer applications, and finance command higher initial salaries than those with a major in management, marketing, or general business. Salaries also vary from city to city, with increases tied to work experience. In 1996 the salaries for this occupation for different levels were:

Texas Employment Outlook. General managers and top executives held over 3.1 million jobs in 1990. Employment is most concentrated in restaurants, groceries, institutions, and hospitals. Employment should grow as fast as the average for most fields through the year 2005, but many service industries will expand more than others. Employment should grow rapidly in computer services, management, consulting, public relations, and other business services. Employment should also grow in industries concerned with health and welfare such as medical clinics and social services agencies. Little to no change in employment is expected in some manufacturing industries.

Interests and Abilities. In general, individuals considering entering this field should enjoy:

They should be able to:
